Movies I’m looking forward to in 2016

Ghazghkull
November 2, 2015

What with the recent rise in popularity of superhero movies, the trend of rebooting classic movies from our childhoods and the standard assortment of fantasy and sci-fi flicks that come out every year the decade we are living in is a veritable smorgasbord of geek friendly movies and movie franchises and I freaking love that!
Although some of these movies turn out to be a swing and a (occasionally catastrophic) miss, that does nothing to curb my enthusiasm and hype while they are still in development… Give me flashy superpowers, shiny lasers and over the top action and I will give you the benefit of the doubt
Here is a short list of stuff I’m most looking forward to in the coming year (spoiler alert, it’s mostly gonna be superhero flicks )

X-Men: Apocalypse (27 May 2016)

The newest installment of the X-Men franchise is going to see the comeback of Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy as the young versions of Magneto and Professor X and will have them face off against En Sabah Nur, one of my favorite villains in the Marvel universe and possibly the mightiest mutant out there… Apocalypse!

Super Troopers 2 (2016)

The internet has been clamoring for this sequel for years now, and with good reason! Super Troopers is a hilarious movie, created by the Broken Lizard comedy group, that has gained such a cult status that even 15 years was not enough to extinguish the enthusiasm and wishes of it’s fanbase. The wish being a goddamn sequel! If you haven’t seen the first film yet, stop reading this, download the movie and watch it, like, RIGHT MEOW!

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (25 March 2016)

The most recent version of everybody’s favorite Caped Crusader will skip the whole “standalone origin story movie” and is going to plop Batman straight into the thick of it by paring him up with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel... Let the world's most one-sided fight begin

Star Trek Beyond (22 July 2016)

Little can be said about the plot of the Star Trek franchise’s newest iteration except that the villain will not be an existing character from past shows or movies but a wholly original creation… also, he will be played by Idris Elba (Aaaaaw yiiis! Mothafuckin’ Stringer Bell)

Doctor Strange (4 November 2016)

Finally! It’s almost here! I’ve been wishing for this one ever since Marvel started ramping up the wonderful mess that is the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe). Benedict Cumberbatch, of Sherlock Holmes fame, is slated to play the Sorcerer Supreme, one of my favorite and arguably one of the most powerful heroes of the Marvel universe… this in itself is enough for me… just the promise of potential fireballs… please let there be fireballs 

Warcraft (10 June 2016)

A live action movie (albeit with substantial CGI) based on the massively popular Warcraft games…
With Travis Fimmel (Ragnar Lothbrok from Vikings) as one of the lead roles…
And orks… lots of orks…
Nuff said!

Deadpool (12 February 2016)

After years of uncertainty, a movie based on one of the most well liked characters in the Marvel universe, the psychotic “Merc with a Mouth”, is finally coming! With Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of Deadpool this movie is sure to be a smash hit. The icing on the cake… it’s going to be rated R, so we are sure to see gratuitous violence and probably a lot of dirty jokes

Independence Day: Resurgence (24 June 2016)

The sequel for this sci-fi hit has been a long time coming, but in the current era of constant reboots and sequels to long dead franchises it was only a matter of time before Independence Day had it’s turn.
This time around, humanity, having harnessed the technology of their alien aggressors, is better prepared for a new invasion but the aliens have also learned from their failures and are coming back with a vengeance.

Suicide Squad (5 August 2016)

For those of you not that familiar with the convoluted storylines and complicated character relationships of DC comic books, the Suicide Squad is a team of supervillains on death row who are employed by the government to carry out deniable black ops missions in exchange for commuted sentences. It is difficult to pin down the original team members of the suicide squad, seeing as how the roster has changed so often, but some villains are considered quintessential for the squad… for example Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, Poison Ivy, Bronze Tiger among others. It is interesting to note that while the Joker was never actually a part of the squad in comic books he will be making an appearance as a member in the movie. This makes sense when considering the fact that “Suicide Squad” is a part of the DCEU (DC Extended Universe… DC’s version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and will tie in with Man of Steel and Baman v Superman… and you can’t have Batman without also having his insane arch nemesis.

Assassin’s Creed (21 December 2016)

While most movies based on video games turn out to be shite, I’m actually kinda excited about this one because, besides the fact that by it’s very premise it has a potential for great swordfights and death defying parkour-like stunts, with Michael Fassbender in the lead role it can’t be a total bust… at least I hope so

Jumanji (25 December 2016)

GHHAAAAAAAA!!! I lost my shit when I found out about the Jumanji reboot! If you were a kid growing up in the 90’s and watched this movie you can’t not be excited. It was my favorite movie when I was a wee little boy of 8 staring my all time favorite comedian (may you rest in peace you beautiful god of laughter). Although I can see the movie turning out to be a great disappointment and ruining my childhood memories (there is always that risk with reboots) I can’t help but feel really psyched about the whole affair.

Underworld: Next Generation (21 October 2016)

Little can be said about the 5th installment of the Underworld franchise, but honestly little needs to be said… as long as it features Kate Beckinsale as the hottest vampire chick in the last decade and a bunch of werewolves duking it out I’m sold 

Captain America: Civil War (6 May 2016)

This one will potentially have me nerdgasming all over the theater or it will piss me off to no end. You see, Civil War is an expansive and important story arc in Marvel’s comic books and is sort of a game changer when it comes to the status quo of the Marvel universe and the relationships between many of it’s heroes. Now the MCU has already made significant changes in the stories, personal backgrounds and relationships of it’s characters so them not following the original Civil War storyline is a given, but what they will think of and how they will reconcile those changes with the Civil War comics is anyone’s guess. Here’s to hoping they nail that shit!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (16 December 2016)

I only found out about this one a couple of days ago but I’m already pretty intrigued as to how it will turn out. Supposedly the story will revolve around a group of rebels trying to steal the plans of the, so far unconstructed, Deathstar. It is going to take place between episode III and episode IV (the latest prequel and the very first Star Wars movie) and is the first in a series of standalone movies set in the Star Wars universe. Other standalone Star Wars movies include an as of yet unnamed, but confirmed, Han Solo movie but also an unconfirmed but highly talked about Boba Fett movie.

Gambit (7 October 2016)

While there is next to no information pertaining the upcoming movie about Marvel’s “Ragin’ Cajun”, besides the fact that he will be played by Channing Tatum, just the fact that a Gambit movie is being made is enough to get me all wet and tingly. Since this movie is being made by 20th Century Fox, the current owners of the rights to the X-Men and makers of the last five X-Men movies, it is not farfetched to say that we might see Gambit join the mutant superheroes in one of their movies sometime in the future
